Submit your nano images for competitions!

The Chapel Hill Analytical and Nanofabrication Laboratory (CHANL), an RTNN member facility, is hosting its 8th annual Scientific Art Competition! The Scientific Art Competition provides an opportunity to showcase scientific data with artistic appeal. The deadline for submission is April 1, 2016. Please visit the CHANL website for more information.

The National Nanotechnology Initiative (NNI) is also hosting an image competition entitled EnvisioNano. EnvisioNano gives researchers the chance to highlight the beauty they see in nano and describe how their research impacts society. The deadline for submission is May 13, 2016. Please visit the EnvisioNano website for details on how to participate.

NC State launches $1M fund for entrepreneurs

With an alumnus donation, NC State is launching a new $1M fund to support NC State student entrepreneurs. The program will begin awarding grants to start-ups this spring. Awardees will also participate in a three month boot camp, the Andrews Launch Accelerator, where they will get advice and coaching from local entrepreneurs, office space, and pro bono legal services. A press release describing the program can be found here. The fund will be managed by the NC State Entrepreneurship Clinic housed in the Poole School of Management. For more information and to apply for the grant, please visit the fund website.

CryoSEM Now Available to RTNN Users

The Analytical Instrumentation Facility (AIF) at NC State recently added the CryoSEM JEOL JSM-7600 to its characterization repertoire. This system can be used to evaluate hydrated, beam sensitive, volatile and low melting point specimens that are normally difficult to image in traditional SEM. The image displayed here shows the microstructure of a fibrin-thrombin hydrogel in its hydrated state. For more information, please visit the AIF website or contact Chuanzhen Zhou at her email czhou@ncsu.edu.

Maude Cuchiara joins RTNN as Project Manager

The RTNN welcomes Maude Cuchiara as a member of its staff!

Maude will manage the RTNN and serve in a variety of roles to ensure RTNN’s success. She will facilitate all client interactions with RTNN as well as communicate RTNN news, information, and events to relevant stakeholders. In addition, she will coordinate the educational arm of RTNN by planning and implementing workshops, conferences, and outreach activities.

Maude joins RTNN from Duke University where she was a research scientist and lab manager for the West Laboratory for Biofunctional Materials. She also brings policy experience as a Research Scholar at the Baker Institute of Public Policy. She earned her Ph.D. in Bioengineering from Rice University (2011) and bachelor’s degrees from NC State in Biomedical Engineering and Spanish (2006).

RTNN to Host its 1st Annual Research Symposium

The 1st Annual Research Triangle Nanotechnology Network (RTNN) Research Symposium will be held on March 22, 2016 at NC State University’s Monteith Research Center on Centennial Campus.

This free, one-day forum brings together researchers making use of RTNN facilities for their fabrication, processing, and analytical characterization needs.  Students and post-doctoral fellows will present highlights from their work in oral sessions.  All members of the RTNN and greater Research Triangle communities are welcome to attend.

Visit our Research Symposium page for more information.
